Zombie Burger

It's been a bad week, in terms of the depression thing. I'm just at a point where I'm afraid to talk about it. I finally let my mother in on the severity of it, and she immediately went into I JUST WANT TO FIX IT mode. And she knows she did, and she knows she can't. BUT OMG IS THERE ANYTHING SHE CAN DO TO FIX IT? NO REALLY, IS THERE? I've made about six different attempts at this paragraph and backspaced them all. My inner Elinor is flaring up and I'm afraid to say anything about how I feel now, because mostly I feel moldy and selfish and unmotivated on the best of days, and hellaciously cranky/stupidly weepy on the worst. And I am so, so afraid that if I don't post regularly enough (mmm, aged news! Delicious), readers are going to wander away, but I know I have to hold off if that's what I need to do. And meanwhile, I want to talk about this the way I usually talk about depression, but I just--can't. I don't know. Maybe I'll do a voice post or something--I feel like y'all would need to hear from my actual tone of voice that I'm not falling to pieces over this. It's just... heavy.

And please know that even when I'm not posting, I'm flagging stories for later, not all of which I even end up using. So really, I am keeping up with things, and if I don't compile a linkspam, you can still see what's going on there, if you want.

Re: Tonner SDCC exclusives: They're apparently going to be selling whatever's leftover on the direct site, so I think I'm going to try that (or eBay) rather than ask an unknowable number of readers to try to track down a slightly variant Tonner Edward. As much as I appreciate y'all offering--and, I mean, I did ask--I'm just not sure how that would not end up being a total clusterfuck, since no one would know if anyone else had managed to get one, and we'd end up, with, like, seven.

Also: they're going to have a Black Canary exclusive as well.

Also-also: I think I have found the Uhura I want.

Zombie Head

* Michael Kupperman is reviving the Golden Age Marvel character Marvex the Super Robot in Marvel's upcoming All Select Comics 70th Anniversary Special #1, and I interviewed him about it.

* While I'm busy touting my Marvel clout, I'm reasonably sure it was a suggestion I made among a group of my friends that led to my pal Kiel Phegley asking whether Paul Cornell & Leonard Kirk's late, lamented Captain Britain & MI-13 might be brought back as a digital comic, and Joe Quesada responding favorably, in the latest Cup o' Joe column at CBR. If you like this idea, why not say so in public, and to any of your friends or acquaintances in Marvel's employ? It sounds like if we ask for it, they'll listen.

* That Cup o' Joe interview also makes it sound like Marvel is out of the line-wide event business, or will be after maybe one more trip to the well. I think that's good for the long-term health of the superhero comics industry, but May's ginormous sales dip likely indicates it'll be a challenge in the short term. I suppose it depends in part on whether, like Marvel over the past couple years, you try really hard to keep all your plates spinning, or whether you can only spotlight one or two franchises at a time to the detriment of the others.

* James Robinson and Mark Bagley on Justice League of America ? Sure, I'll eat it. I don't have the experience with Robinson that many superhero readers do, having never read Starman , but while I didn't end up liking his One Year Later Batman arc I've enjoyed his work in the Superman books recently quite a bit. Bagley, meanwhile, is not my favorite artist when it comes to drawing DC characters, but he knows how to tell a story and his work on Ultimate Spider-Man remains a woefully underappreciated component of that title's success. I remain concerned about DC putting the cart before the horse by preventing its flagship team title from including its biggest characters because they're busy elsewhere--there's a reason Grant Morrison's JLA and Brian Bendis's Avengers were/are the biggest books of their eras, and it's not because they focused on Vixen or Jack of Hearts--but still, color me intrigued. (Via JK Parkin.)

* Now this is how you write a post-artcomix-festival thank-you letter: TCAF's Chris Butcher shows us how it's done.

* The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror 2009---aka Kramers Ergot 7.5 --will be guest-edited by Sammy Harkham. That line-up is effing nuts.

* It wasn't until Heidi MacDonald used the word "remote" to describe the old location of the Eisner Awards that I realized, hey, wait, yeah, that is kinda weird, isn't it? All the way at the end of the convention center by itself after the show shuts down for the evening, and you've got to walk under the sails through that deserted stretch of swag tables and autograph aisles. Anyway it's moving to the Hilton.

* Because the original Red Dawn is a) a gonzo artifact of its time; b) a John Milius fever dream; c) TOTALLY AWESOME, I'm not sure I've said word one about Their plans to remake the movie, because why bother? But Latino Review is reporting that Tony Gilroy, Oscar-nominated writer/director of Michael Clayton and screenwriter of, I think, the last two Bourne movies is writing the Red Dawn remake. Suddenly this project got a lot more interesting. Incidentally, Red Dawn has recently joined Atlas Shrugged as a key text for the Obama era in the minds of some prominent and semi-prominent conservatives, so it should be interesting to see how they react to the prospect of the film being remade by the pen of a writer whose thrillers are generally perceived to tilt left.

* That Red Dawn link was via SciFi Wire, but I'm not linking to them again until they knock off their obnoxious habit of putting spoilers in their article headlines, above the by-now-pointless "spoiler warning" tag.

* B-Sol reviews The Blob . That scene where it eats the old man's hand really was horrifying to watch as a kid, wasn't it?

* These are two years old at least, but no less awesome for that: Marvel go-to cover artist Marko Djurdjevic redesigns He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Dig this Marilyn Manson-esque Skeletor! But the Mer-Man is more representative of what the redesigns look like overall. (Via Monster Brains.)

* I have no idea what the deal is with this photo from Rob Zombie's upcoming Halloween 2 , and I'm unlikely ever to find out first-hand, but damn what a great character design. It's almost criminal to consign it to some other monster's movie. (Via Arrow in the Head.)

* Finally, my pal Chris Ward talks to Jazma Online about Political Power: Barack Obama , his upcoming comic from Bluewater (yes, the "Female Force" people--Chris wrote the Condoleezza Rice issue). I'm trying to think how to put this...Chris is an interesting choice to write this project, or to write anything that you don't want to read like the work of a crazy person, which is what Chris is. I think the interview speaks for itself. And it also has some juicy tidbits about life at Wizard.

>>The Arlington Arts Center opens Paradox Now this Friday. These eight, varied artists play around with cultural ideas through sculpture, film, photography, and more. D.C. artist A. Clarke Bedford, who the AAC jokes is their "alternative art historian," creates imaginary "artifacts" for things that never happened, while Philadelphia sculptor Erin Williams makes a family tree that climbs from believable through history until she tracks her heritage implausibly back to Jesus. 6 to 9 p.m.

>>Join Irvine Contemporary for an "alley block party" this Saturday featuring their new urban art exhibition, Street/Studio . The work -- by popular NY, LA and Berlin artists like Shepard Fairey, Dalek, and EVOL -- is both inside the gallery and on the exterior walls in the alley behind it. Party with DJs Iona Rozeal Brown and Jahsonic from 6 to 11 p.m.

>>Making it a neighborhood event, the Pink Line Project opens Not From Concentrate: A Juicy Art Exhibit at Hounshell, just a block from Irvine at 1506 14th Street NW. Grab some vegan treats and check out the art between 6 and 8 p.m.

>>Keep heading down 14th to U Street on Saturday to catch Hamiltonian Gallery's opening exhibit with five of their brand new fellows. 7 to 9 p.m.

>>Get in some pool time at Brightest Young Things' ongoing Summer Camp at Capitol Skyline Hotel. This week features art installations, body painting, and lots of other good ol' hands-on art activities, camp-style, along with some DJs. 12 to 8 p.m., all ages, $10. Drinks, food, lockers available for purchase/rental. Also at Skyline, see video art screenings curated by Brandon Morse from Conner Contemporary at 6 p.m.

>>We're a fan of the work non-profit Critical Exposure does in helping D.C. kids to learn photography to document conditions in their public schools. If you are, too, help them raise funds through GlobalGiving's campaign; if they raise $4000 before June 30 they earn a permanent spot on the donation list.

DJ Rampage Exclusive Asian Dan Minimix

Asian Dan Interview: DJ Rampage

1. Who is RAMPAGE?

Rampage is one person, Eddie is my real name. I am a DJ/producer/remixer from the southside of Chicago.

2. What are some of your influences? What was your first musical memory?

Some of my influences include lots of old Chicago house, ghetto house, anything with lots of bass, 90s rave techno, video games from Sega and Nintendo and many old horror films.
My first musical memory would be hearing my family listen to lots of different music from disco to R&B to salsa to oldies to freestyle to house and so on. That’s what basically made me love music.

3. How you describe your music/DJ-style? Explain your production process.

My music is basically what I like to listen to and I don’t try to stay in one certain genre. What I mostly play in my DJ sets are tracks that me and my boys from ghetto division produce or remix. I also tend to play around 130 bpm and mix all types of house and underground dance music. I’ll even play sets at slower bpms like disco and reggae and also fast bpms like juke and bassline/dubstep. My production process is basically all software at the moment from a pretty cheap pc haha. I use Reason & Recycle for producing/remixing and Cool Edit Pro/Acid Pro/Sound Forge for my mixtapes.

4. How does it feel to be part of the Chicago dance scene, such a prolific and important city to dance music? Any big Chicago acts that you feel are gonna put Chicago back on the map?

Chicago is a great city and I love it. We have so much culture and great music but I feel we need more unity in having massive events like we did in the 90s. We need more underground dance music to be played on the radio and at mainstream clubs. I’m tired of hearing crappy pop/rap music everywhere. We’re a house music city and we need to keep it like that. There’s a lot of hidden talent in Chicago and I think Ghetto Division is definitely part of that. Maddjazz, Rob Threezy, Charlie Glitch, Moonman & D-51 are not only good friends of mine but have so much talent and the world needs to know it. A few others that are making some noise from Chicago are Flosstradamus, Black Holes, Potty mouth, Movement music, Content, DJ Bam Bam, Willy Joy, Starter Djs, Fat Kids, SixPoint DJs and Gant-man just to name a few.

5. What are you top 5 dance tracks?

1: Kano – I’m Ready
2: Dbx – Phreak
3: High Powered Boys – Hoes Get Down
4: Paul Johnson – Feel my MF Bass
5: Pineapples – Come on Closer
